Dog Days

Want to meet lots of interesting new people? Hang out with your dog! My pooch and I hit the streets daily in search of green pastures (dog parks or open space), tasty treats (a dog biscuit for Spot and a drip coffee for me) and new friends. (Need I say more?) People may be able to ignore me, but no one misses my pal Spot.

Here’s where we go when our paws hit the bricks…

FREMONT

Fremont is super dog friendly. Start with Railey’s Leash and Treat. Railey’s has a wide selection of collars, clothes and products for dogs of all sizes. They sell fresh-baked dog treats, a huge variety of bones, natural and organic food, and bones! (Spot is seriously considering going vegan.) With our shopping bags full, and a hankering for a burger and a brew, we head over to Norm’s Eatery and Ale House. Norm’s is by far and away the most dog-friendly eating establishment this side of the Cascades. I grab a seat in a booth where I can catch a game on the TV and Spot can kick back by my feet and sniff the other pups as they stroll by.

WALLINGFORD & GREENLAKE

Wallingford is a great place to stroll on two legs and four. After meeting friends for a big breakfast at Julia’s (sorry, Spot has to sit outside), we head over to High Maintenance Bitch —the place is a bit over the top, but hey, nothing is too good for my guy. To work-off breakfast we trot our way around Greenlake—a dog-walker’s paradise, with dogs of all shapes and sizes strolling by with their owners. Plus, there is plenty of open space and green grass for Spot run off his excess energy! There is also a nearby off-leash dog area just north of the lake. Here Spot can roam free, chase tennis balls and visit with other four-legged pals. When Spot needs a serious scrub down it is off to GroomingSpa—a full and self service spa for pets. Most of the time, I take the opportunity to bond with Spot by washing him myself in one of their dog grooming stations. But when the job is just too much to handle, I drop him off in the good hands of the GroomingSpa staff.

DOWNTOWN

Doggy goes downtown! It’s not as odd as it sounds! Downtown has many fine dog friendly offerings, most important of which is the Downtown Dog Lounge. This is where Spot spends three days a week while I am at work. I drop him off in the morning and pick him up in the afternoon. The staff here really treats Spot like the king he is, taking him on walks, giving him treats and “scratching his butt” just like their signs say! They sell dog treats, food and accessories too—a one-stop dog shop and playcare! After I pick Spot up, we like to stop by the off-leash dog area on Third Avenue. This is the perfect place for Spot to let off a little steam before heading home for the night.
